I have just discovered bed bugs in my apartment. I have contacted both the property manager and the landlord, and I'm waiting for them to take action. I have two issues though: I want to be able to move right away without taking the infestation with me, and I want to be able to break my lease so I CAN move.
I know it's not a good idea to move before the bugs are exterminated, but the issue is this: I desperately want to move back in with my mom, since I was living in the apartment with my fiance and we just broke up. Even if I DIDN'T have bed bugs I'd still be desperate to move, since living there by myself is extremely lonely and I'm surrounded by all his things and by all the places where we used to spend all our time together. Plus he's also desperate to break the lease, and I'm afraid of him not paying his half of the rent and me being stuck with the whole thing which I definitely cannot afford.
Since this just happened I can't be sure how the situation will be handled by the landlord/manager yet, but even so I'd still like to know if there's any way I can break the lease. It doesn't sound like they're going to treat the whole building, and I know that infestations usually come back if the whole building isn't treated.
I am planning on moving back to my mom's this weekend. I'm going to take every precaution; before I leave I'm going to wash and dry all my clothes, put them in sealed bags, and only take the bare essentials with me until I can figure out what to do with the rest. I feel like I should wait to move until the inspector comes so I know the extent of the problem, but the manager seems to be very slow at getting her act together, so I'm worried it won't have been inspected by the time I want to move. I suppose I could wait longer but living there is torture. I'm reluctant to protect my bed or sleep elsewhere since I don't want it to spread, but lying in a bed where bugs are biting me is so freaky and I have trouble sleeping. I'm so afraid of infesting my mom's place, though, and I want to be able to take more than just clothes. I'm not sure if I can put my shoes through the washer and dryer, so would freezing them for 2 weeks be sufficient? Should I worry about my toiletries? Hairbrush? I'm terrified my laptop and headphones are contaminated but I can't live without them. What about my Samsung Galaxy? My guitar? :((
As for the sealed bags....would double bagging things in garbage bags suffice? I don't think I can afford the ziploc ones.
If anyone has any tips, suggestions, info...I would greatly appreciate it.
