As that was our first infestation I would like to relate how it started and what was done to achieve success.
My elderly husband was complaining of itching and being bit. The first inspection, I did not have time to do an "in depth" look, but I saw nothing. Days went by and more complaining. So upon looking on his side of the bed, I found evidence of tiny blood stains and tiny black dirt. Not only on the bedsheets but the pillow cases. Upon research I figured we were invaded by bedbugs.
So I tore our bed apart. Found the same stuff on the mattress. Initially I was using wet paper towels, later I found that wide packing tape was more successful at getting the whole village stuck and could throw it out in the trash rather than allow the vacuum to be a new village, or setting up the trash man to spread the infestation.
It was an infestation in our bed. The mattress; the box spring; the metal frame the box spring sat on and who knew what else at that point.
I did the cleaning, I did the bagging with the borax. I took the same substance as used in kitty litter as an absorbent and desiccant spreading it around the baseboard at the rug. (We didn't / don't have animals or children crawling around near this powder item which otherwise could prove dangerous to them). I wrapped the box spring in sheet plastic sealed airtight with packing tape. I did the same with the mattress, then allowed some days to go by to see how we did.
He actually started using his recliner as a bed to avoid the bed completely, but still he was getting bitten. He petitioned me to inspect his chair. Another infestation! With packing tape as my weapon, I used that to slurp; wipe; pluck off any an critters moving or not in all seams, crevasses and hiding places starting with 5x a day to 3 times a day, to inspect as needed.
I had another thing to watch up and that was when I heard something drop from my night grown to the vinyl floor. Well now, a bedbug in it's preferred mode of transport after a blood meal. This now made me carry tape into bathroom to bar their pathway into other areas by completely immobilizing the enemy in a packing tape casket.
This war went on for quite a while, as when all things seem under control, one can let their guard down. Finally, we were in the clear. But one day as I came home from a 2 hour shopping trip, I happened to see a bedbug crawling up my hiking boot. He died fast as I wasn't going to allow that one behind our parameter. But it also told me how these buggers can get into the house in the first place.
Now let me say, I did not find an infestation in the walls, or the floor or the baseboard. I must have caught them prior to their spreading into those areas. For if this would have happened it would have needing a differing type of access to their hide outs and without a packing tape success story.
Fast forward to today... Am being bitten again. I think its bedbugs and am scouting. So far have not found any evidence, but more in depth inspections are necessary.
Will keep in touch.
